The 500th anniversary of the voyage of Bartolomeu Dias, 1487-1488, has brought wide recognition of his achievement. This volume is a modest contribution towards recalling both his epoch-making voyage, and other Portuguese maritime activities in south African waters until the mid-seventeenth century.
